The Cathedral of Christ The Light

Photobucket

On the "Year in Architecture", we assembled our favorite 2008 architectural constructions and one which unfortunately didn't make the list was "The Cathedral of Christ The Light." Although it was cut from our list, we will gladly take the time to engage into detail with this monumental structure by Skidmore, Owings and Merril. If you observe the pictures of the project, it's evident it required much work from it's creators to build and insert every detail. The project was designed by architect, Craig W. Hartman as a replacement for the Cathedral of Saint Francis de Sales, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1989. To make sure it stand strong for many years in existence, it's capable of withstanding a 100 years of earthquakes (like 1 year isn't enough). It overlooks Lake Merritt and its setting is Oakland, California. The cathedral's concept mainly focuses on the experience of light and space. This is more than just a cathedral, inside it has mausoleum, conference centre, offices, residences, a book store and a cafe. Besides being a cathedral, it is sure to become a tourist attraction as well.
